Coach Oleen says this about the offense:
Our returners are highlighted by Idris Idris whom we feel will be a candidate for conference Player of the Year as we return him to his more natural guard position after playing the high post for us last year. We return our PG Dwight Abad but will be without our other PG Wade Ahlvers (knee injury). Two of our top 3 shooters return in Jordan Bieberle (our team Freshman of the Year last year) and Luis Marrero. A player who will surprise everyone will be sophomore Larry McLin who we pretty well kept under wrap last year playing behind Trey Beachum. Larry is a long and very athletic guard who has a really nice skill set and plays with tremendous intensity. We look for Vincent Roybal to make contributions on the front line in his fourth year on the varsity. Vince is long and very athletic and defends and rebounds with a passion. We just need him to utilize his strengths and consistently do what he does best. Alex Loul has been released by his doctors and is ready to go after using a medical redshirt last season after injuring his knee. He should help our frontline along with junior Derek Knopp who is in the best physical condition of his career right now. Derek has a high basketball IQ and knows as well as anyone on the frontline how we want things done. Devin Smith is another junior who is very athletic and explosive. Devin can really guard a ball hard anywhere on the court and can explode to the rim offensively very well when he makes the correct read that gets him to the rim in the right situations.
We have added four transfers who should all make an impact on this year’s team. Jamelle Hays averaged over 10 points and 8 rebounds (led the team) for Brown Mackie last year from his high post position. We feel that Jamelle will be a very good high post player in the triangle offense and he will be very good at crashing the offensive glass from up there. Jamelle is also finding that he is also very effective when he gets opportunities within the scheme of the triangle offense to go down low some. Transfer frontliner Brandon Huskey from Coffeyville can run like a gazelle and jump like a deer and should have a much larger role for us than he did at Coffeyville where he was playing behind Division I talent. Brandon is learning how to utilize his strengths and to do what we need him to do in our system. Kirby Hawkins is a true combo guard who can really score (he led Clackamas and was one of the top scorers in the NWCCAA) whether it be from behind the arc, mid range (off the pass or dribble) or exploding to the rim. As Kirby acclimates to the triangle offense and learns how to defend with a passion in our system he will be a complete player for us. Nate Coleman is a long and athletic guard who does everything very well. One of the best midrange shooters we have had, but he also led the Pacific Coast Conference is 3 point shooting % and Nate is very explosive to the rim. But what we like most about him is that he can defend very well anywhere on the court, he is a bigtime rebounding guard, he is a great teammate and most important….he does all of this consistently every day.
Coach says this about the defense:
We return a good group of players who have experienced the wars of the KCAC. There are some very good players in this group. These young men are very unselfish, very good teammates and are providing good leadership to the rest of the team. We feel that we have brought in four good transfer players (two guards and two frontliners) to add just what we needed to make this a very well balanced and deep team. We expect these four transfers to have a strong and positive impact on our team. They have a genuine and eager willingness to learn our system not only from the coaches but from our returning players as well. The ultimate success of this team will be in direct proportion to how well these young men put the greater good of the team ahead of any self gratification. We are still in the “honeymoon” stage, but at this point in time, we are on track.
